The following gear will be required of ALL RACERS. At any point during the race a race official may ask you to present any of the following items. Failure to do so will result in a severe penalty and possible disqualification.
- Race Map/Passport (provided – one per racer)
- Compass
- (not required, but recommended) UTM grid reader
- Headlamp with EXTRA batteries
- Water carrying capacity of at least 64 oz. (can be combined between containers)
- Fire starter (i.e. magnesium block w/striking flint; chemically-treated fire sticks, etc.)
- Matches in waterproof container
- Whistle (emergency type: pealess plastic whistle like the Fox 40. Many sternum straps have an integrated whistle so check yours. You may have one already.)
Racers must provide their own bicycles and watercraft.
GrizzlyMan Adventure Race additionally required equipment list:
Mountain Bike or Cyclocross bike (fat tires might help if snow is on the course)
Oar/paddle/flipper powered watercraft (Teams may choose tandem or individual craft.) Canoes, kayaks, inflatable kayaks, river boards, and rafts are all legal. Race what you feel most comfortable in! Several local shops have boats available for rent.

Wetsuit or Drysuit (at a minimum: a “farmer john” style wetsuit with splash top) Several local shops have wetsuits for rent.

Type I, II, or III PFD
Bicycling helmet (CPSC marked bicycling helmets) must be worn during cycling AND paddling portions of race. You may also opt to bring a paddling-specific helmet for paddling portions of the race.
